About Representative Durant

Political Career

Peter started in public service in 1999 when he was appointed to a position on the Spencer Finance Committee later becoming the board’s chairman in 2003. In 2006 Peter was elected to the Spencer Selectboard and served two terms in this position.

Peter was first elected as State Representative in 2010 in an election that became the closest Representative’s election in Massachusetts history. After winning by just a single vote, the Massachusetts Superior Court ruled the election too close to call and the House of Representatives ordered a new election. Peter prevailed the second time around by a wider margin and was elected to represent the 6th Worcester District on May 10th 2011.

Peter currently serves on the Joint Committee on Transportation, the Joint Committee on Municipalities, and the House Post Audit and Oversight Committee.

Professional Background

Before becoming a legislator, Peter was the Vice President of Service for Yankee Technology (now Automated Logic Corp.) in Ludlow, MA. This company and Peter’s career has focused on bringing energy conservation and building automation solutions to businesses throughout New England.

As a small business owner for 12 years during the 80’s and 90’s Peter learned what it takes to create jobs, meet payrolls and provide customer service.

“Like many in business, I’ve benefited from booming economies, and suffered through punishing recessions. I know what small businesses, their owners, and employees go through every day; the obstacles they face, and the determination it takes to be successful and grow in Massachusetts.”

Political Philosophy

I believe in the conservative principles that have made this country great. That of:

  • Limited government and personal freedoms as enumerated in the Constitution of the United States.
  • Local control at both the state and municipal level.
  • Individual responsibility while providing compassion and support for those who are either unable to help themselves or who need temporary assistance to get back on their feet.

I believe that government is in the service business, and I think that too often those in government forget that. It is our job to serve the people, not the other way around.

I believe in bipartisanship. Someone once told me that: “no one party has a monopoly on all the good ideas.” One party rule anywhere creates bad policies and makes bad decisions. Effective government takes place when legislators are willing to hash out their differences and find common ground and compromise. My claims are backed up by my voting record which is one of the most bipartisan in the Massachusetts Legislature.

Peter is a lifelong resident of Spencer and recently celebrated his 25th wedding anniversary with wife Lisa in 2013. When not working Peter and Lisa enjoy traveling, spending time with family and their two “Furry Children” Beck and Stanley who enjoy ruling their household on a daily basis.

Peter holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Political Science from Northeastern University and an Associate’s Degree in Underwater Technology from the Florida Institute of Technology.
